in the dying forest
Flames become
the final chapter
of their fate and doom
birds’ wings ablaze
in the smoking tower
of afternoon
A sparrow sings her death song
frets about her nest
pushes them out
one by one
those born to her
nurtured
until they are devoured with the rest
Man-beasts
pour water from the sky
They tell
terrible stories
of the inferno and why
the sky fell
The tiniest tears
someone ought to know
how brave she was
the courage of the sparrow
