~Quodlibet~
~The Hundred Bites~
~VI~

~the son standing in the hallway~
~listening closely~
~ear to the door~
~waiting for a commercial~
~so he can ask momma’s permission~
~he wants to go play in the yard~
~mustn’t interrupt her program~
~he feels it winding up~
~an expert at timing~
~he nudges the door open~
~the telephone rings~
~she answers it~
~dismisses him with a wave of her hand~
~she is weeping~
~speaking with her mother on the phone~
~the pretty man in the show died~
~they are afraid for the commercial to end~
~how can life go on without him~
~the boy closes the door silently~
~lays down on the floor outside her door~
~puts a thumb in his mouth~
~begins to suckle & drifts away thinking~
~he doesn’t like her very much~
~his mother~

~VI.  Television Dawn~

~window situated western~
~no thing as perfect~
~so television dawn~
~echoes as sideshow~
~four walls gone~
~her eyes are closed~
~ghosts play tag on her face~
~hide between lines of age~
~the dawn she misses runs there~
~view-screen reflected flesh~
~blue/gray in the afternoon~
~this last promise~
~a thing broken~
~even her ghosts abandon her~
~body slack & unvisited~
~no thing as perfect~
~so television dawn~

~Like A Tear~

~face dark as silt~
  ~high water crashing~
  ~cascading down~
  ~yellow/white~
  ~red vein showing~
  ~tide rolls in smooth~
  ~liquid saline blanket~
  ~lids blink~
  ~reveal eyes of mud~
  ~a white worm crawls through~
  ~falls across the cheek~
  ~like a tear~

~thick lips grimace~
  ~create a parody of a grin~
  ~teeth whiter than white~
  ~ivory columns~
  ~part and a pink snake leaps out~
  ~seizes the falling morsel~
  ~and bears it home~
  ~like a tear~
  ~like a hostage~
  ~like a promise~
  ~protesting genesis~

~the pearl white gates fall~
  ~as the tide flows back~
  ~eyes slam shut~
  ~then open~
  ~yellow/white~
  ~vein broken~
  ~red blood drips~
~down an ebony cheek of sand~
  ~like a tear~
  ~like a river become man~

~lightning arcs shiver~
~destroy the fabric of the sky~

~an insignificant mound of sand~
  ~rises up~
  ~shouts curses unheeded~
  ~to the heavens~
~fear is born in the mud of its eyes~
  ~thunder breaks~
  ~the man thing falls down~
  ~it has come to pray~
  ~to be carried away~
  ~like a tear~
  ~like a promise of nations~

~when I was very young~I made a promise to myself~
~I would come to know my children~
~to listen & learn from them~
~no gift compares~nothing in life lasts so long~
~the only certainty I have ever known~
~that children are the all~

~A Child Is~

A Child is
a moment of sunshine
forever illuminating the inner
hallways of our existence

A Child is
the answer to all we are,
the solution
to all we would be and are not.

A Child is
responsibility defined,
the perfect symmetry
of reward foreshadowing deed.

A Child is
proof-positive of worth,
when the questions come falling,
“Who am I?”
“What have I done?”

A Child is
a keeper of promises.
Indeed, a Child is
a beautiful promise kept.
